Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery
Clínica Corachan's Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery Service in the Paediatric Department aims to offer a diagnostic and therapeutic response to all vertebral column pathologies in children and adolescents, especially in the case of scoliosis.
In addition to the orthopaedic correction of the spine, the service has a team of neuropaediatricians who specialise in neuromuscular and genetic pathology with the aim of studying and giving the aetiological diagnosis of the different causes of scoliosis.
Scoliosis surgery
Scoliosis is a pathology of the spinal column which produces an abnormal curvature of the spine, giving it an ‘S’ or a ‘C’ form. Approximately 10% of the Spanish population have a slight asymmetry of the trunk that can be considered a variant of normality. However, curves of more than 10° are abnormal. There are various types of scoliosis: idiopathic, congenital, neuromuscular and degenerative.
According to studies, the most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic (of unknown cause), which affects more than 80% of cases. It is more frequent in women (80%) than in men (20%) and it most commonly appears between 10 and 14 years of age.
